Salmon and Steelhead
Exotic leaper of the cold, deep lakes of the northeast and
Canada! The landlocked is a swift, slashing fish that is excited by action! Consequently,
lures should zip through the water if they are to produce strikes.
From ice-out until surface temperatures rise, the landlocks
of northern lakes frequent the surface. Surface trolling with light tackle is the
most popular and exciting way of taking them during this period. A No. 4 Panther
Martin® Deluxe is an excellent choice for salmon trolling. It can be
trolled with a spinner outfit or a fly rod. Another killing choice: a No. 4 PM blade
ahead of a No. 4 streamer.
When trolling with a fly rod, use a sinking fly line, which
will keep the lure a couple of feet under the surface and a long leader (at least
10 feet) of monofilament in 6 or 8-pound test.
Troll at considerably faster speeds than that used for other
species. Do not twitch the rod; just let the PM blade do its thing. Pay particular
attention to water which lies over reefs, off long, projecting points and where
outcroppings of rock or the tops of boulders indicate shoals. Rework any spot which
produces a strike.
Begin counting down to where the fish are holding, increasing the count as necessary to reach the fish-holding
depth. This will increase as the summer advances and fish move deeper in search
of comfortable temperatures.
In streams inhabited by landlocked salmon, fish for them
with Panther Martin Regulars, Fluorescents, Metallics and Holographics in sizes 9 and 15. Be sure to check
local regulations against flyfishing-only restrictions.
